The Value Of Our Handmade Toys
All of our wood is sourced from North America. Some of it is purchased from reputable lumber yards while some it has been made from wood that was cleared for farmland years ago.
When we do need to purchase wood for specialty items such as baby/toddler toys and toys that are being shipped internationally, we purchase from reputable woodworkers and suppliers that have an understanding of our wood needs.
The varieties of wood we work with include eastern white maple, eastern white pine, yellow pine, fir, red oak, white oak, spruce, poplar and birch.
We also believe in giving back to our environment and a portion of every sale goes into purchasing trees for reforestation.
Made By Hand In Canada
Most of our toys has been designed by a person using a pencil and a sketch pad. The sketch is then taken to one of our contracted woodworkers to cut out using hand tools or a lathe or scroll saw. The woodworkers finish the piece then send it to one of our artists to sand and then hand paint.
Each toy is lovingly painted by an artist using a variety of paint brushes. Fine detailed painting is added using toothpicks for very fine lines. After the acrylic paint has cured, a durable polyurethane is applied to the piece to ensure long lasting colour that won't fade or wash off.
Our toys are made to last for generation after generation and cannot be compared with cheap plastic toys that easily break and quickly accumulate in landfills.
Canadian toys are subject to stringent laws and tests to ensure they are completely safe for the children that use them. The same cannot be said with foreign made toys. Each and every toy MD Handfield Designs Inc. creates is tested to make sure it meets all government safety standards before it is put into the hands of either a retailer or a customer.
One thing to realize about our products is that a real person works on each toy. Canadian minimum wages are much higher than over sea wages. This means that many companies have outsourced their production and exploit their employees in order to produce items for a cheaper price. We will not do that. We value our employees as individuals. We also value their time and their trade skills from our artists and woodworkers right down to our marketing managers.
You can be proud and assured that jobs and money is kept in the Canadian economy and that employees are not exploited or taken advantage of.
